Do You Have to Care to be an Effective Leader?

John Maxwell says people don't care about what you know unless they know you care. He says that the most important question people ask about a leader is, "Does he care about me?" They want to know this more than wanting to know about the leader's competence and whether he or she can take them or the organization to the next level.

Clearly, not all leaders embraced this philosophy. Some give it lip service--they know it's true and that it's important but they don't really care about their people. Oh, maybe some think they care but their actions don't show it.

Aspiring leaders need to be able to exhibit care prior to being placed into a position of leadership. If they haven't shown it prior to receiving leadership responsibility, I believe the chance it will develop later is not a chance worth taking.  Organizations that care about their people and that want to excel should never forget this truth.
